Water that transforms: PTP promotes harvesting systems in rural schools in Bocas del Toro
In communities such as Rambala, Punta Peña, in the district of Chiriquí Grande, and La Loma, in the district of Jirondai-Comarca Ngäbe Bugle, in Bocas del Toro, having daily access to drinking water had been a constant challenge. Aware of this need, on September 30, 2025, Petroterminal de Panamá, S.A. delivered rainwater harvesting systems to these schools as part of its program “Schools with water, communities with a future”.
The initiative ensures that 2,168 students and their teachers have access to this vital resource for their health and well-being, reducing health risks and improving learning conditions. Schools now have a system that harnesses rainwater as a safe source, transforming the educational experience into a more reliable space for families.
The project represented an investment of B/.37,557.00 and incorporates an additional value: raising environmental awareness in schools. By seeing this system in operation, children learn in practice how a sustainable solution can improve their daily lives while protecting the environment.
In addition to guaranteeing access to water, the project leaves a mark on the way the school community interacts with its environment. By having a system that responsibly uses natural resources, students learn by example and reinforce sustainability values that they can take home and share with their communities. In this way, schools become spaces for comprehensive learning where health is cared for and an environmental culture is built for the future.
This effort reaffirms PTP’s commitment to SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation and SDG 4: Quality Education, demonstrating that ensuring water in schools also means ensuring a future with more opportunities for the entire community.
